Five people have been confirmed killed with a number of others who were injured after the explosion that occurred in the residential area in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, the Rivers State Regional Government, on Saturday.
A Director of the Environment and Executive of the Youth and Environment Advocacy Center, Fyneface Dumnamene, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, said the explosion occurred in one of the rooms in the residential area used to store illegal fine petroleum products.
According to Dumnamene, the resident of the residence where the explosion occurred usually buy illegal kerosene oil and other products, save it, and sell it back to community members.
Dumnamene said that the incident occurred at the end of Saturday, killing five people, four women and one man who was burned outside of recognition.

“The incident occurred at the end of Saturday, April 26, around 11 am, killing five people, four women and one man, burned outside of recognition,” he said.
Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Ayirge-Koko, who also confirmed the incident when giving briefing to reporters, said the explosion was caused when a resident lit a fire near the room where illegal petroleum products were stored.
“What really caused a fire was that a resident brought a cooking stove to the place and was preparing for the noodles, which triggered the fire,” said Ayongse-Koko, while also confirmed the figure of the victim, added that the police had begun this investigation of this explosion.
