The National Environmental Standards and Regulations (Nesrea) has arrested three people because of trafficking in the endangered wildlife species in Abuja.
Director of Assistant Nesrea (Press), Nwamaka Ejiofor, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Park Service on Tuesday.
The Director registered the suspects as Musa Usman, Samila Abdullahi, and Saidu Jagaban.
Ejiofor said: “The suspects were arrested in various parts of the city because of illegal sales of exotic birds forbidden and wild animals that were contrary to the provisions of endangered species.
“While Usman and Abdullahi were found to have 15 senegal parrots and 1 African gray beo bird, Saidu Jagaban was arrested for selling three deer dead.
“The three of them will remain detained while the investigation continues.”
Director -Jenden Nesrea, Prof. Innocent Barikor, reminded Nigerians that endangered species trade remains a crime under Nigeria’s law.
Barikor warns that the perpetrators will be sued accordingly.
