Transport Canada appointed observers after a train derailed northeast of Montreal – Montreal

Transport Canada has appointed an observer to help oversee the investigation into a train derailment northeast of Montreal last weekend.

The department said it is closely monitoring actions taken after the train derailment, which occurred on the edge of a residential neighborhood in Repentigny, Que.

Although no hazardous materials were spilled and no one was injured, 49 cars derailed near homes along the railroad tracks.

Transport Canada said rail safety inspectors are monitoring CN Rail’s response, including ensuring that safety regulations and speed limits are followed.

Trains currently operate in the area with a temporary speed limit of around 15 km/h, well below the regulated speed limit of 80 km/h.

CN previously indicated that its crews completely rebuilt the tracks and track bed before train traffic resumed overnight from Tuesday through Wednesday. Additional improvements are also planned.
