A group of supporters of the Congress of Progressives (APC) in the state of Zamfara urged the national president of the party, Urar Ganduje, to reject any attempt by the governor Dauda Lawal to defect towards the APC before the 2027 elections.
The group, which operates under the banner of the supporters of the APC of Zamfara (Zas), issued a statement strongly formulated on Wednesday, accusing the governor Lawal of looking for political refuge in the APC to evade the investigations on corruption.
Comrade Muttaka Ibrahim Ruwan Bore, who presides over the group, said that the presumed plan of the governor is led by the fear of being pursued on ties reported with the former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and the former governor of the Exceral Godwin Emefiele banks.
He described the move as an attempt to guarantee a “soft landing” by aligning himself with the party to power to protect himself from the current investigations.
“Dauda always boasts that the people have voted for him. We are saying that he should remain in the Democratic Party of people and test his popularity to see if he can also guarantee 20 percent of the votes.
“We are not wondering to join us, but it would be better for him to test his popularity that arrived in 2027.”
“Governor Dauda wants to collect where he didn’t sow,” Bore said. “We, the members of the APC of Zamfara, are satisfied with our current leaders and we do not welcome an additional burden.”
The group listed significant parts of the party in the state – including former governors Ahmad Sani Yarima, Mamuda Shinkafi, Abdu’aziz Yari and Bello Matawalle – as respected leaders who have maintained the basic force of the party.
Bast also stated that the alleged offer of Defection of Dauda was a strategy calculated to obtain political coverage if it loses its re -election offer in 2027.
He insisted on the fact that the governor is trying to use the APC as a shield against possible criminal accusations related to bad financial conduct, underlining that “the party does not support corruption”.
“Our party is intolerant to corruption,” he said. “We cannot accept anyone with the luggage of the misdeed past.”
Governor Dauda, a former banker, has undergone criticism since he came into office in 2023 under the Popular Democratic Party platform (PDP), with opponents indicating his alleged ties with controversial data as a source of concern.
The APC, which lost the governor in the last general elections, has remained a dominant political force in Zamfara, largely due to the continuous influence of its former governors.
As political realignments intensify before the 2027 elections, the defections will be modified the race.
However, the Zas group warned the members of the APC to remain vigilant and to protect the party to be used as “paradise for those who try to escape justice”.
“We will continue our defense and ensure that our party remains a house of integrity,” said Bore.
