The contingent of the IMO state at the National Sports Festival of 2024, tagged Gateway Games 2024, left Owerri for Abeokuta, in the state of Ogun, where the festival starts on Sunday at the Mko Abiola stadium.
No less than 600 athletes and officials of the Imo State are participating in the Multi-Sport event, which has over 30 disciplines, including Paralympic sports. The Festival, initially scheduled for 2024, will be held in 2025 after a reprogramming, marking his return to the Ogun state since 2006.
Vice -president Kashim Shettimo should declare the Festival open in a great ceremony that will show the cultural wealth of Nigeria and the athletic ability. The National Sports Festival, since its institution in 1973, remains a key symbol of national unity and sports development.
Before their departure on Saturday, the governor of the Imo State, illustrious Senator Hope Uzodimma, reiterated his commitment for the participation of the state while he received the symbolic torch of the unit on Monday 28 April 2025, at the IMO government

Governor Uzodimma, in a support show, approved the journey for athletes and loaded them to compete with determination and bring medals back to the state.
“Get out with courage and commitment,” the governor urged. “Heads home medals that will reflect the excellence and resilience that define the imo state under our 3rs administration.”
Also addressing the contingent to Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, before their departure, commissioner for sport, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, he turned on the athletes with a humorous but motivating challenge.
“I hope you know what it means to get a handshake from the governor?” Onyeocha made fun of, encouraging athletes to aim for gold and win the symbolic reward of the governor.
The IMO contingent should join their counterparts from all over the country to Sunday’s opening ceremony, since the best talents of the nation converge for two weeks of ferocious competition and celebration of sportiness.
