‘Not a political journey,’ Peter Obi defended the presence of Pope Leo’s inauguration

Presidential candidate from the Labor Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has returned from what he calls a “very reflective” visit to the Vatican, where he attended the new inauguration ceremony organized by the Holy Throne.

In a statement shared on Monday through his official account X (previously Twitter), Obi distanced a visit from any political tone, emphasizing that his presence was driven by moral and spiritual beliefs rather than political intentions.

“I just returned from the Vatican, and that was a very solemn and reflective visit,” Obi wrote.

“My participation in the inauguration ceremony is in line with my previous testimony about the inauguration, expletive oath, and official ceremonies throughout the world-this is no exception.”

Obi, known for his vocal attitude about government and integrity, emphasized that moments like the Vatican ceremony must be protected from political interpretation.

“Such opportunities bring deep moral and spiritual meaning,” he added. “This has never been a political event and must remain untouched by politics. Some moments are best reserved for calm contemplation.”

Clarifying public speculation, Obi noted that he did not participate in the papal hearing and therefore did not meet Pope Francis directly. He explained that the session was appointed exclusively to the head of state and accredited diplomats.

However, he urged the Nigerians to reflect on the essence of Pope Francis, who emphasized the urgency of fighting poverty and bridging community divisions.

“The importance of this meeting does not lie in who is seen or where they sit, but in the power of the Pope’s message,” Obi said. “He calls for unity outside of tribes, religions, or political loyalty. That is a message we must carry.”

Quoting the Pope’s appeal, Obi reiterated the need for leaders to refer to national resources towards social development. “The struggle against corruption must remain a national priority. This is the only way to ensure that our resources serve education, health care, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation,” he said.

He concluded his message with the call to conscience, urged those who are committed to communicating with the common good.

In between the Vatican events, Obi briefly passed the path with the President of Bola Tinubu and the former Governor of the State Ekiti, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. The moment, arrested and distributed by President Bayo Onanuga’s aide, attracted attention on social media for symbolic appearance of politeness among Nigerian political leaders.

While the picture triggered online political comments, Obi’s message remained focused on the moral weight of the event.

“In a world that grows more divided, the message from the Vatican reminds us of what is really important: justice, compassion, and unity,” he concluded.
