IGP orders investigate the police involved in fuel/cash extortion along Benin Highway

Police Inspector General, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the direct investigation of the police arrested in a viral video along the Benin highway to extort some fuel and cash travelers when they cannot provide evidence from the registration of the electronic center motorbike (ECMR) that has been suspended by the police.

In a video that triggers public anger, a police officer is seen asking the driver and passenger for N5,000 or five liters of fuel because it does not have ECMR evidence.

When reacting to the video, IGP, in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the officers had been identified and the troops would immediately take action that decided to serve as a prevention of others.

According to a statement posted on the official X handle of the police, Adejobi said the six officers, including the Chief Supervisory Supervisory of their police, were immediately summoned to the headquarters to face disciplined steps.

He stated that the officers were made to appear before IGP which strongly condemned their behavior as “embarrassing, unpleasant, and at all unacceptable.”

He added that Egbetokun had ordered direct disciplinary actions, resulting in an orderly room trial initiation for the officers involved.

The statement titled “Renewal of Extortion Incident along Benin Bypass”, reads:

“After the viral video circulation that shows extortion by police officers along Benin bypass, the Nigerian Police, in line with zero tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional behavior, has taken immediate action.

“After their arrival at the headquarters of the troops, six officers who were wrong, including their supervisory officers, the head of the police supervisor, lined up to appear before the Police Inspector General, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun Ph.D, NPM, which condemned their embarrassing, unpleasant, and could not be fulfilled.

“He further ordered the commencement of immediate discipline procedures against the six officers involved.

“Therefore, the officers have been asked, while the trial of the orderly room for the inspector involved in the video has begun.

“This reiterates the commitment of troops to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability. The public believes that such violations will not be tolerated with any guise, and the right sanctions will be imposed in line with established disciplinary procedures.”
