FG commissions 16 Infrastructure projects in Federal Neuropsychiatric KWares

Sokoto (basic reporter) The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Wellness has commissioned 16 key infrastructure projects at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, KWare in the state of Sokoto, as part of a national effort to improve the tertiary health institutions under the renewed agenda of the hope of Tinubu.

During the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, the Minister of State for Health and Social Wellness, dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, described projects as a great leap forward in strengthening mental health care and the supply of general services in the northern region of Nigeria.

“This mass in service is a clear demonstration of the commitment of the Tinubu Administration in making federal health institutions more effective, accessible and focused on people,” said dr. Salako. “The projects here in Kware are part of over 500 infrastructure updates completed throughout the country in just two years.”

The recently inauguration structures include a molecular laboratory, an intensive care unit, a dependence treatment center from regional women and children, an emergency center and a multipurpose students hostel, a School of Post Basic Nursing (Psychiatry) and an alternative energy system to solar energy, among others.

The minister praised the leadership of the hospital, in particular the outgoing medical director, Professor Sheu rises, for the prudent use of government resources and the transformation of the hospital into a model of quality psychiatric care.

He also revealed that over 50 similar projects have been commissioned in four geopolitical areas, highlighting the investments under the administration in health infrastructures, development of the workforce and digital transformation. According to dr. Salako, over 15,000 health workers have been employed in the last year and digitization initiatives are underway to improve transparency, efficiency and quality of care.

On the reform of mental health, dr. Salako reiterated the ministry’s commitment in the implementation of the National Mental Health Act, 2023. This includes the integration of mental health in primary health services, the decriminalization of suicide and the attack on stigma.

The government, he said, is also facing energy challenges in the health sector through renewable solutions and will soon host a national dialogue on power in health care. In addition, the imminent renewed Hope Health Connect aims to provide free medical, surgical, ophthalmological and audiology services to one million vulnerable Nigerians.

Dr. Salako thanked the government of the state of Sokoto and the traditional institutions, in particular the sultan of Sokoto, for their continuous support and collaboration in the development of health. He invited healthcare professionals throughout Nigeria to align with the renewed vision of hope and help to transform the country’s health sector into a continental center for excellence.
