A Democratic Party Chief (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has generated a public debate after declaring the President of the Tinubu soccer from the Congress of All Progressive (APC) to “smarter” than his political opponents, including Peter Obi from the Labor Party.
Sowunmi, who served as a spokesman for the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, made a statement during the appearance on television politics Channels today on Monday.
The new meeting with the president at Bourdillon’s residence in Lagos during the Eid al -Fitr celebration has drawn criticism from his party, by questioning his loyalty to Atiku and PDP.
In response, Sowunmi defended his decision, insisted it was not a betrayal or neglect of his political ideals. “I am free as an adult to make a decision. I am not bound to anyone. I am not anti-Tinubu,” he said. “I have my mouth, I have my words, and I have my argument.”

PDP supporters encourage the assumption that he must align unconditionally with the current Atiku political agenda, note, “Is he [Atiku] running for president now? He runs a coalition that everyone knows I am not part of. Why does anyone assume I don’t have my personality? Do you know how long I was at the party? “
In the leadership of President Tinubu, Sowunmi expressed his careful admiration, noting that the president’s governance style was more strategic and dynamic than his opponents. “Bermued, he is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than the others,” Sowunmi said.
He added that many critics were too fast to vilify every government policy without understanding the complexity of governance. “I began to feel uncomfortable by vilifying all policies by those who did not understand what was needed to design futuristic ideas that could succeed,” he said.
According to him, his visit to the President was driven by a concern for Nigeria’s democracy and curiosity about the weaknesses felt by Tinubu. “His brain is very alert, he is fit. You know when you ask someone’s question and he answers without looking at the book,” said Sowunmi.
Apart from the shift of tone towards the President, Sowunmi firmly about one limit: He will not accept political appointment from the APC government while remaining a member of the PDP.
Sowunmi’s comments echoed a similar change that was seen in November 2024, when one former Atiku spokesman, Daniel Bwala, accepted the promise of meeting as a special advisor to President Tinubu about policy communication after being previously a government critic.
