The federal government reiterated its commitment to promote a stronger collaboration and mutual understanding between the Nigerian armed forces and the civilian population as part of the efforts to improve national security and unity.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the certainty to the opening ceremony of the conference of civil-military relations organized by the Defense headquarters in Abuja.
Represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Ogbodo Chinasa Nnam, the minister described the conference as a “significant milestone” in the journey of Nigeria towards a more inclusive and participatory security framework.
“The reality we face today is uncomfortable but undeniable. There is a trusted deficit between the military and many segments of the Nigerian population.
“This perception is rooted in history, disinformation or isolated accidents, represents a threat to our national unity and stability,” said Nnam.
“It is time for the Nigerians to see the military not as an occupying force but as an integral part of our national family: a force for good, protection and progress,” he added.
Nnamo invited the media to play a strategic role in counteracting the disinformation and promotion of responsible relationships, while ensuring that the ministry was ready to work with the defense headquarters, the organizations of civil society and the media to implement the resolutions of the conference.
“We must build stronger bridges of interaction through the commitments of the Town Hall, joint projects, civic education and institutional paintings that bring the military closer to the nation cardiac beat,” he said.
He expressed the trust that the conference would help to pave the way for a safer, united and resilient Nigeria.
The conference, the theme “Hearts and winning minds: not Kinytic approaches to national security”, focused on filling the gap between the military and civil population through dialogue, the commitment of the community, civil education, the awareness of the media and humanitarian cooperation.
