The President of the United States Donald Trump, Sunday 13 July 2025, said he would send patriot aerial defense missiles in Ukraine.

Trump told journalists of the joint base Andrews outside Washington that missiles were needed to defend Ukraine because Russian President Vladimir Putin “speaks of Nice but then bombs all in the evening”.

Trump did not give a number of patriots he intends to send to Ukraine, but said the United States would be refunded for their costs by the European Union.

He said: “We will send them Patriots, whose need they need, because Putin really surprised many people. He speaks well and then all evening bombs. But there is a little problem there. I don’t like it.

“Basically we will send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They will pay us 100% for this, and that’s how we want.”

The president became increasingly disenchanted by Putin because the Russian leader resisted Trump’s attempts to negotiate a ceased between Ukraine and Russia.

Trump is expected to announce a new plan to arm Ukraine with offensive weapons in a strong departure from its previous position.

The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters commentary request.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy asked greater defensive skills to reject a daily barrage of missile and drones attacks from Russia.

Trump plans to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss Ukraine and other issues this week.
