Buhari would have died a long time ago if he had relying on Nigerian hospitals – Adhesin

A former presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adhesina, he raised a new debate on the Nigeria bankrupt health system, stating in no uncertain terms that the former president Muhammadu Buhari could have died years ago if he had chosen to receive medical treatment within the country.

Adhesin made the controversial observation during a Tuesday’s television interview on Tuesday, while he responds to the criticisms about Bohari’s death in a London hospital on Sunday 13 July 2025.

The former president, who fought an unmealing disease, died at around 16:30 in the United Kingdom, rekindling the control of his long history of research for medical care abroad throughout his presidency and before.

“He always had his doctors in London, even when he wasn’t in charge, so it wasn’t just about the moment he was president,” said Adhesina.

By defending the coherent medical trips of Buhari in the United Kingdom, Adhesin claimed that the decision was a question of survival, not luxury.

“And then, you have to be first live to change or correct some things in your country,” he added.

“If he said:” I will do my doctors in Nigeria just like a showoff “, he could have long been dead, because there may not be the experience necessary in the country”.

Adhesin comments aroused clear reactions from the Nigerians, many of whom consider the declaration as a harmful accusation of the state of the nation’s health system, in particular under the administration of Buhari, who promised reforms but offered little in terms of tangible improvement to public health infrastructures.

Critics say that it is ironic that a leader who was eight years old to improve local health care has constantly opted for care abroad, in terms of death outside the country that once governed.

Buhari, who was civil president of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, had previously governed the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

His body should arrive in Daura, in Katsina’s state, for the burial according to Islamic rites, with security agents and government officials who are already preparing.
