I wanted him to become a lawyer, says the father of the silver medalist Hafson

Olasunkanmi Majakodunmi, father of Nigeria’s silver medalist, Hafson Majakodunmi, has expressed pride in his daughter’s achievement for the current championship of the African Athletics Confederation (CAA) of his daughter.

Hafson secured silver in the final of 400m female sub-18, marking a time of 54.34 seconds while representing Nigeria in his debut at the international departure.

Speaking with journalists after the race, her father revealed that she had hoped that she became a lawyer due to her own lack of formal education.

“I wanted him to become a lawyer because he did not have the opportunity to go to school. But I thank his mother because they often confused, he would sneak into the stadium with his bag without my knowledge,” he said.

Majakodunmi first discovered his daughter’s passion for athletics during an internal sporting event in the Grammar School of Abeokuta, but was completely convinced of his potential during his performance at the recent National Sports Festival in Ogun.

“That was when his coach convinced me to allow him to continue. I had worries, especially because she is a girl, but today I thank God. I am proud that I have projected me positively,” he added.

He urged parents to allow their children to continue their passion.

‘Chioma told me not to be afraid’ – Hafson reflects on debut performance

In an interview after the race, Hafson accredited his teammate and gold medalist, Nwachukwu Chioma, for helping to boost his moral before the race.

“At first I was really intimidated. In the call room, I said:” Chioma, I’m afraid for these people. “But she told me: ‘You can do it. That really lifted me.”

Despite the nerves of competing in his first international meeting, Hafson said that the experience has strengthened his determination.

“The crowd did not affect me much. The crowd of the National Sports Festival was even stronger, but representing Nigeria for the first time made it overwhelming. Now, I am motivated to train more and make it even better in the future,” he said.
