Tinubu warns the divisive content, urges the responsible online involvement

Ball President Ahmed Tinubu has asked Nigerian young people who are active in the digital media landscape to use their platforms responsibly, encouraging them to fight for national unity and social progress through their online influence.

Speaking at the Progressive Digital Media Summit held in Abuja on Friday, President Tinubu acknowledged the increasing power of new media and emphasizing the need for integrity and goals in digital involvement.

“Your generation has recognized this moment. You use digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But along with the growth of your influence, as well as the sense of our collective goals and responsibilities,” he said.

He urged social media influencers and content creators to prioritize accurate information, job creation, and nation development rather than sensationalism and divisive narratives.

“Use your influence to foster unity, not a division,” added the President. “Digital media is now the main driver of economic growth, civilian involvement, and social change.”

Highlighting government support for technology ecosystems, Tinubu refers to initiatives such as national digital innovation funds and startup -friendly policies as proof of administrative commitment to encourage digital innovation.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff of the President, praised the digital generation of their role in shaping the future of Nigeria, describing them as “Nigerian front guard who was reborn.” He acknowledged the challenges ahead but stated that the journey was important for national progress.

Also speaking at the event, Bayo Onanuga, a special advisor to the President about information and strategies, raises concerns about the emergence of wrong information, disinformation, and the use of content produced by AI to manipulate public opinion.

“Social media becomes chaotic. Content that divides rampant. Deepfake and material produced by AI are increasingly used against political opponents,” Onanuga warned. “The wrong information spread five times faster than the official correction.”

Sebun Dada, a special assistant to the president in the new media and the Summit organizer, said that digital media had developed into a strong tool that was able to form public discourse. He called for collective awareness of potential risks, including violations of privacy and threats to national cohesion.

Summit, with the theme “launched an important role in new media in national development,” Uniting the creator of content, political communicators, and digital strategists to explore the influence of social media that developed on governance, civil participation, and economy.
