D’Tigress crowned the Afrobasket champions fifth time in a row

The high -level presidential delegation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, brought together support for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, since they won a fifth consecutive historical title of Afobasket on Sunday night. The president was satisfied with the solid performance of the team after the final.

The delegation is directed by Shehu Dikko, president of the National Sports Commission, and includes senior government officials and notable figures in the sports scene and the media of Nigeria.

Among them are Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Anite; Former Minister of Sports and Presidential spokesman, Sunday Dare; Special Assistant of the President in Digital and New Media, Otega Ogra; and special senior assistant in the media, Busaola Kukoyi.

The D’Atigress, which remained undefeated in the Afrobasket competition for a decade, won the Afrobasket final against Mali 78-64 in what has been called a decisive sample of skill, resistance and national pride.

Victoria reaffirms Nigeria’s supremacy in the continent and also reinforces her growing profile in the world basketball stage. Nigeria and Mali not only passed the group phase with great success, but also continued their domain in the quarterfinals and the semifinals.

Both teams demonstrated the tenacity and resolution to ensure a place in the very anticipated final game of this year’s African championship. Since the 2011 tournament in Bamako, Nigeria and Mali have faced six times.

That year, Mali, the host country, ended Nigeria’s hopes to win the title with a semifinal victory 71–62.

Two years later, in Maputo, Mozambique, Mali defeated Nigeria twice. First, they won 78-45 in the group phase, then won 57-50 in the fifth place game.

Two years later, in 2019, Nigeria beat Mali 79-58 in Dakar, Senegal. They were hit again in the 2021 tournament final in Yaundé, Cameroon. Since 2011, Mali and Nigeria have won three times.

The trophy will finally land in Abuja. Like this year, four years ago, Mali and Nigeria arrived at the Women’s Afrobasket undefeated after four games. Nigeria finally brought his game A, denying Mali a victory with a final score of 70-59.

Interestingly, eight players of each team who played in the 2021 championship game are on the current lists.
