Police Commissioner for a Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, on Friday explained why the presidential candidate Afric Action Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, Omoyle Sowore, was detained by the police.
The activist was detained after he respected the Inspector General of the Police Monitoring Unit on Wednesday.
Sowore’s invitation followed the petition by an unnamed person.
The Sahara Reporters publisher had a broken hand on Thursday when several police operators stormed their cells and tried to take him to go to an unknown location.
Shogunle, who spoke to the protesters in Abuja, said Sowore was detained after he refused to make a statement during the interrogation.

He said there were two petitions against the activist.
CP said: “Two petitions against Omoyle Sowore were shown to him right in front of me. One bordered by falsification of police documents, which he published online, and we all know the legal position. It is your job to provide a source of how you appear about the documents that are falsified. The second petition must be done with cybullying.
“The two petitions were shown to him before his lawyer. The problem now is that he refused to make a statement in front of his lawyer. That was in the notes.
“And the procedure under Nigeria’s law is very clear. When an accusation is made against you, you are called, you have an obligation to put your own position.
“The same law that gives him the right to remain silent also gives the police the responsibility of certain tasks to be done when someone who has been suspected of committing violations decides not to speak, which you also realize. And I believe we are professionals, and the procedures set by the law are being followed.”
