The federal government has announced that the education university will then run both Nigerian certificates in education (NCE) and degree programs, a development that is said to strengthen teacher education in the country.
Minister of Education, Dr. Supi Alausa, represented by the Minister of State for education, Suwaiba said Ahmad, made this known to the National Summit about Teacher Education held in Abuja on Thursday. He described this initiative as a “historical milestone in the development of Nigerian education,” quoting the Federal Education College (Establishment) of Law No. 43 of 2023.
“For the first time in our history, our education universities have been legally empowered to run NCE programs and titles simultaneously in teacher education disciplines,” Ahmad said. “The dual mandate system now gives them full legislative and operational authority to expand their academic offers while preserving their core mission to produce very skilled and professional teachers.”

Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Education College (NCCE), Prof. Paulinus Okwelle, praised the reform as a turning point, noting that institutions that previously depended on affiliation with the university to run a degree program. “Today, with full legislative support, they now have the autonomy to do it directly, utilize their own workforce, infrastructure, and academic expertise,” he said.
He added that reforms would produce graduates with NCE and B.Ed qualifications, ensure the supply of teachers who meet the requirements, and help maintain skilled educators in this sector.
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee at the Federal Education College, Adamu Tanko, convinced the stakeholders that the degree given by the education university would bring the same values and recognition as given by Nigerian universities.
