Boko Haram leader denies death in Niger

On Friday a close assistant to the head of the jihadist group Boko Haram denied the statements of the Nigerian army that he was killed in a target air attack in the Lake Chad basin.

The militant group has conducted a bloody insurrection to establish an Islamic caliphate in the North -Ast of Nigeria since 2009, leaving about 40,000 people who have forced more than two million people to escape from their homes.

The Niger said last Thursday that Boko’s leader Haram Bakura, whose real name was given as Ibrahim Mahamadu, was killed during a “surgical operation” on an island in the region of Diffa del Sud -est of Niger last week.

But in an audio message sent to AFP by a security source in the area of ​​Lake Chad, one of Bakura’s lieutenants called News of the leader’s Death “completely false”.

“I am with him now, we are together,” he said in the Hausa language spoken in the region, defining the announcement of the Niger army “propaganda”.

Since 2023, the Niger was governed by a military junta that took power in a coup but fought to stem the jihadist violence that shakes the country.
