PDP chose South for 2027 presidential tickets, maintaining damagum as national chairman

The Democratic People’s Party (PDP) has officially zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria, marks the party’s strategic direction ahead of the next general election.

The decision was achieved during the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the PDP (NEC) held in Abuja on Monday, where the main leadership position and zoning regulation were reviewed.

In addition to the presidential zoning in the south, NEC also confirmed Umar Damagum as National Substantive Party Chairperson. Damagum has been serving in acting capacity since March 2023, following the court’s decision in the state of Benue which deleted the former Chairman of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu from the office.

Before stepping into the role as acting chairman, Damagum held the position of Deputy Chairperson of the PDP (North).

In his acceptance speech, Damagum stated awards to party leaders and their colleagues at the National Work Committee (NWC), describing their sustainable support as a source of strength.

“Before now, I thought everything we did was not appreciated. This movement was not only for me, but for all NWC. I owe them,” he said.

He also pondered the challenges faced by the party and the progress made under his leadership. “To navigate this party so far, we have come when things are very difficult, but for the glory of God, we are still intact as an inseparable party,” he added.

With the current presidential ticket is officially categorized and the structure of internal leadership is strengthened, PDP positions itself to carry out unity and competitive in the 2027 election.
