Professor Ibrahim Gambari of Abuja (Core Reporter) has commissioned African defense on the need for collective security and strategic defense cooperation between African nations.

The former Secretary General of the United Nations gave the assignment on Monday 25 August during the top of the African CDs, while giving his message of good will. He highlighted the meaning of the summit, while underlining the need for collective security and strategic defense cooperation between African nations.

He said: “For those of us who have lived the pre and post-independence of African nations, this event evokes emotions and nostalgia.

“In this regard, we vividly remember as in the late 1950s, the deceased president Kwame Nkrumah of Uganda articulated a vision of an African collective security system through the creation of a high African command.

“The high African command is the highest form of strategic defense cooperation on the continent. The vision of Nkrumah was further developed here in Nigeria in 1964 at the organization of the Council of Ministers of the African unit that meet in which the creation of a high African command was at the top of its agenda. Active attention to this vision, not only for nostalgia, because if you can’t go to if you can’t go to if you can’t go to if you can’t go to if you can’t go to if you can’t go to if you can’t If you don’t go to if you don’t go to if you don’t go to if you don’t go since you go to the top of her day.

“The transition of that vision, however, in concrete reality has escaped us to the continent. This is largely due to the fact that we must first protect our respective countries before we can therefore, in the concentric circles of defense policy, to protect our respective regions while we strive to protect our continent.

“It is therefore very symbolic that Nigeria today hosts this conference of the young people of the African defense (Monday), the first of its kind in 2025, about 60 years, 61 years later.”

Gambari observed that, despite several efforts for the insecurity of control in the region, Africa has yet to face numerous security challenges, including over 1,000 insurrection groups, bandits, terrorism and violent conflicts in regions such as Sudan, South Sudan and Sahel.

He underlined the importance of active, practical and proactive collaboration between African nations to improve collective security, including synergy in military cooperation, common training, sharing of intelligence and the development of skills.

In addition, it underlines the need to improve and strengthen the African defense industry, have its technologies and avoid external control.

In the meantime, Gambari has urged the summit to go beyond the discussions and develop concrete and realistic solutions to combat threats to peace and security in Africa, designing a security architecture that guarantees human sovereignty and safety.

“Africa must design, possess and build a security architecture that guarantees our sovereignty and guarantees human security in all its dimensions,” he said.

The topic of the summit, “fighting contemporary threats to regional peace and security in Africa: the role of the strategic collaboration of defense”, resonates with African scholars, security and politicians experts.
