NBA drags the police to court for the colored glass permit policy

The Nigerian lawyer association has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian police forces, challenging the legality of its recently introduced colored glass permit policy.

The case, presented on September 2nd at the Federal Court of Abuja, arrived after the meeting of the National Executive Council of the Association (NEC) held on August 23 in Enugu, where the members decided to test the policy in court.

According to politics, which was announced by the police inspector in April, motorists are in charge of obtaining annual permits for glasses for colored vehicles through a digital portal managed by a private seller, with the application that will begin on October 2, 2025.

But the NBA, through its section on public interest and on the law on development (Spidel), argued that the directive violates the constitutional rights of citizens to dignity, privacy, movement and property.

He also criticized dependence on the law on colored glass (Prohibition), a 1991 military decree, insisting on the fact that he cannot bear proof of constitutionality in a democratic context.

NBA-SPIDEL has also raised concerns about the regime’s financial structure, questioning the reason why payments for permits are unrelated to a private account belonging to Parkway projects instead of the Federation account or the single account of the Treasury (TSA).

Confirming the legal action, president of NBA-Spidel, Prof. Paul Ananaba, San, said that the association is determined to pursue the question of his logical conclusion.

“We urge the police to respect the judicial trial and suspend the application of this policy until the Court does its pronunciation,” said Ananaba.

The reports of harassment and extortion related to politics have continued nationally, despite the extension of its application date.

The case, filed under the cause n. FHC/Abj/CS/182/2025, lists the incorporated administrators of the NBA as an applicant and the police inspector as a defendant. It has yet to be assigned to a judge.
