Femi Kuti reflects life and freeing himself outside his father

Afrobeat artist Femi Kuti has openly discussed her life under the influence of her late father, Fela Anapongo-Kuti, and insisting that her life purpose is always to open her own route.

Energetic comfort that is open during this new interview at the Afropolitan podcast which is reflected in a constant comparison with fela and heavy pressure when he is young.

“At school, at the bus stop, where will people say, ‘Will you not be like your father? Will you play music?’ The pressure is too much.

However, Femi clarified that he reached an important moment when he understood that he could never be someone else, even Fela, John Coltrane, or Charlie Parker.

“If God wants me to be Fela, I will be Fela. I have to be Femi Kuti.” He said.

Femi talked about how, after living with his father and even dressed like him, he finally made the decision to go and start his own band, which he said was greeted with criticism.

“The fan base goes down to me. They hate me. The press hates me. There is no internet at that time, so I can’t even defend myself.” Femi noted during the interview.

Femi, who highlighted how he developed a unique music identity by combining activism with creativity, also revealed how his grandmother gave him strong love when he would lose focus.

“He said, ‘What kind of musician do you do here for two weeks and you haven’t taken your sign.’ I cried all night.
