Don urges the government to build, rehabilitate the roads to host modern vehicular traffic

A professor of transport geography, Lokoja Federal University (Full), Adventune Musilimu Adeyinka, invited the federal and state government to build and rehabilitate the existing roads to host modern vehicular traffic to face the incessant block in the cities and in state capital.

He also argued that the mass underground transport system and the transport of light subway is introduced to Nigerian cities and other African countries to reduce traffic congestion.

Professor Adeyinka presented the call on Wednesday at the Adankolo campus while delivering the 30th series of inaugural lessons of the University Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State with the title “Do not plan cities: the dilemma of planning and development of transport in Nigeria”

According to him, there should be supply of some basic transport structures such as pedestrian walkways, crossing of zebra and lampposts, claiming that the supply of pedestrian walkway will encourage students to walk in schools and make them healthier.

“It is necessary to encourage the design and construction of bicycle paths that will run next to the main roads. This will reduce pressure on public transport and personal vehicles. The bicycle is seen as an ecological and low cost alternative to meet people’s mobility needs.

“This way of transport is common in European countries, especially in the Italian city of Venice and Braga in Portugal,” he recommended.

While asking for the three levels of the government in Nigeria

Give the priority to the maintenance of routine of road networks, Professor Adeyinka has declared that through a regular awareness of citizens and renovation exercises, there will be a change in the attitude of citizens towards the maintenance of road transport infrastructures and drainage structures to improve the free flow of water.

Speaking of the introduction of

Mass and light metro transit in Nigeria, the geography of transport of transport has declared: “This will undoubtedly reduce the volume of the vehicular movement on the streets.

“These methods of transport are more respectful of the environment and sustainable for urban mobility than the large number of paragraph transport methods.

“The functioning of motorcycles and tricycles should be limited to the power roads because, apart from the fact that they carry a few passengers, their operation on the highways poses significant safety risks. Their functioning method is worrying while mixing and competing with heavy vehicles on the highways,” he said.

Previously, the vice-changing of the institution, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi in his speech has congratulated Professor Adeyinka for his academic milestone, describing the lesson as a timely and topical topic, in view of the rapid rhythm of urbanization and the many challenges associated with the growth of the city and mobility in our country.

He expressed concern about the worsening of the conditions of the federal roads throughout the country, appealing to the federal government to rehabilitate the Kabba -lorin road to facilitate the vehicular movement.

While recognizing and appreciating the family of the inaugural teacher for their support, encouragement and sacrifices, they contributed to the academic journey of Professor Adeyinka, the deputy chancellor also thanks those who contributed in one way or another for the success history of the Don University.
