President Bola Tinubu has appointed a 39-year-old computer engineering professor, Segun Aina, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Committee.
Aina will succeed the outgoing Chancellor, Ishaq Oloyede, whose term ends on 31 July 2026.
The appointment was made known on Thursday in a statement released by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, Aina, a professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, brings extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination systems and institutional reforms, areas considered crucial to the ongoing modernization of Nigeria’s education sector.
The statement described him as one of the youngest professors in his field and noted that he would emerge as the youngest chancellor in the history of JAMB once he assumed office.
It added that Aina holds a bachelor’s degree in computer systems engineering from the University of Kent, as well as a master’s degree and PhD from Loughborough University, with specializations in internet computing, network security and digital signal processing. He also attended the Senior Management Program at the Lagos Business School.
With over 15 years of professional experience, Aina would advise federal and state governments on digital transition, system design and institutional reforms. He has also advised major exam bodies, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, particularly on ICT systems and exam integrity.
The Presidency also highlighted its membership of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers and international organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed confidence in Aina’s ability to consolidate the reforms introduced under Oloyede, particularly in improving transparency and efficiency in the conduct of public examinations.
The President said the new chancellor should leverage his technical expertise and political experience to reposition the board and deepen ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary education admissions process.
Aina’s appointment comes at a time when stakeholders have continued to call for greater digital safeguards and credibility in examination systems, amid growing concerns over malpractice and systemic inefficiencies.
