A former pilot who tries to turn off the aircraft engine while driving a task at a magic mushroom has confessing guilty for disturbing the flight crew.

Joseph Emerson, former Alaska Airlines pilot, was sitting in a flight air flight air flight 2059 from Everett to San Francisco when He tried to cut the engine in 2023.

Two pilots who flew stopped him from doing it, and the plane was then diverted to Portland, where he landed safely with 84 people in it.

After his arrest, Emerson told the police that he was annoyed at the death of a new friend, had taken a psilocybin – commonly known as a magic mushroom – about two days before, and had not slept for more than 40 hours.

The pilot who was not on duty, Pleasant Hill, California, was charged in a federal court for disturbing the flight crew.

Separately, the State indictment Oregon accusing him with 83 accusations of endangering others and one accusation of endangering the plane.

He now pleaded guilty to the calculation of federal and without contests – which brought the same legal effect as a request for guilty – on state charges.

‘What happened wrong’

Speaking to the court on Friday, Emerson said he did not intend to hurt anyone, but accepted “I still made the decision to take Psilocybin, and that caused my inability to determine that I was operating in reality for a long period of time”.

“That doesn’t make this right,” he said. “What happened was wrong and it shouldn’t have happened, and I bear the responsibility for it.”

According to the US NBC News partner network, one of the pilots also told the investigator that Emerson said “I am not good” before he grabbed a red firefighting handle – which would cut the fuel into the engine.

Multnomah District Prosecutor’s Deputy Eric Pickard said in a written statement on Friday that what “Joseph Emerson did was careless, selfish, and criminal”.

“We must remember how close he was to destroy life not only 84 people on the 2059 plane, but all their family members and friends too,” he added.

Typically, airline pilots that are not in charge of sitting in the flight deck jump seat behind the pilot to fly back to their base if the seats are available.

As part of the defense agreement for the State indictment, Emerson was sentenced to 50 days in prison – which he had served – five years in probation, 664 hours of community service and $ 60,569 (£ 44,840) as restitution.

He is still facing a sentence for federal accusations to disturb the flight crew, which was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Emerson will appear in court for federal sentences on November 17.
