France captain Kylian Mbappe wrote another chapter in football history after becoming the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in consecutive tournaments.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker became the top scorer of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with 10 goals in eight matches, beating Argentina captain Lionel Messi to the prestigious award.
Having also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with eight goals, Mbappe is now the first player to retain the tournament’s top scorer award in consecutive editions.
His latest achievement further cements his status as one of the greatest players to grace football’s biggest stage.
Historic feat of the Golden Shoe
Mbappe’s 10 goals made him the top scorer of the 2026 World Cup and the first player to score 10 goals in a single men’s World Cup since West Germany legend Gerd Muller achieved the feat in 1970.
Only Frenchman Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the 1958 tournament, and Hungarian Sandor Kocsis, who scored 11 goals in 1954, have scored more goals in a single edition of the competition.
His consistency throughout the tournament proved crucial in securing another Golden Boot despite France failing to reach the title.
New all-time World Cup goals record
Mbappe also became the top scorer in FIFA Men’s World Cup history after increasing his tally to 22 goals.
The French superstar overtook Lionel Messi after scoring a brace against England in the third-place play-off, moving one goal ahead of the Argentine captain.
Although France lost the thrilling match 6-4 to finish fourth, Mbappe’s brace ensured they left North America with another strong record.
Messi went into the World Cup final with the opportunity to regain his record, but failed to score as Argentina suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
Goals throughout the tournament
Mbappe put in exceptional performances from the group stage through to the round of 16.
He scored twice against Senegal and Iraq during the group stage before adding another brace against Sweden in the round of 32.
The Real Madrid forward also scored the winning penalty against Paraguay in the round of 16 before scoring against Morocco in the quarter-finals.
His last two goals came in France’s third-place playoff against England, bringing his tournament total to 10.
Other top scorers
Lionel Messi finished second in the race for the Golden Boot with eight goals in eight appearances for Argentina.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland scored seven goals each during the tournament.
France winger Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane completed the list of top scorers with six goals each.
The impressive numbers reflect the attacking quality shown during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Simon wins the Golden Glove
Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon won the Golden Glove award after an outstanding tournament which helped La Roja to their second FIFA World Cup title.
The Athletic Club goalkeeper has conceded just one goal in eight games, keeping seven clean sheets.
Charles De Ketelaere of Belgium was the only player to score against Simon throughout the competition.
