The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has called on the Ogoni people to trust the ongoing Ogoni dialogue process coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, stressing that it is a good opportunity to seek a permanent solution to the Ogoni problem.
MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, speaking in Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogoni people, last weekend, said that after 33 years of costly resistance against Nigeria’s oil industry, there was a need to embrace the government’s dialogue initiative. According to him, the government’s decision to engage in dialogue with the Ogoni people represents a welcome departure from previous government initiatives which were essentially impositions.
Nsuke condemned attempts by those who benefit from the Ogoni crisis to truncate the work of the dialogue committee to support their sponsorship and patronage.
“There is an attempt by people who do not live outside MOSOP to scuttle the work of the Ogoni Dialogue Committee. And we say we have been here for 33 years and the government has opened discussions with the Ogoni people right now through the Ogoni Dialogue Committee, and we are saying this is an opportunity, a good opportunity to solve this problem and therefore MOSOP is cooperating in the process because we want to put an end to this problem. We want a solution; we want Ogoni to move forward towards the development, adequate development”.
“People who have no life outside MOSOP are trying to scupper the dialogue process because they want to continue to exploit the suffering of the Ogoni people to keep us in this because it feeds them and their families.”
“What we are saying and I am telling the Ogoni is that it is time, something that has begun must also have an end.”
On the alleged leadership crisis in MOSOP, Nsuke noted that a court of competent jurisdiction has ruled that the Wai-Ogosu election is void. He said no one should talk about Wai-Ogosu, stressing that MOSOP leadership is intact and there is no crisis.
“I was duly elected to the MOSOP secretariat on December 19, 2018 and I remain president of MOSOP. The matter was taken to court and we are now on appeal. Until the court decides on my case, or until we establish a proper steering committee for the elections, I will remain president of MOSOP and that is the fact.”
“Furthermore, the MOSOP steering committee has decided that until all legal issues are addressed and elections are conducted, the current MOSOP leadership will remain in office”
