The FIFA World Soccer Governing Agency has implemented a three -point deduction, three goals in Equatorial Guinea for presenting a player not eligible in the World Cup qualifiers, reports Owngoalnigeria.com.
The central Africans beat both Namibia and Liberia 1-0 in November 2023, but FIFA granted its 3-0 victories technical opponents six months later because the National Thunder sent Emilio Nsue, who scored the winner in both games.
NSUE, who is the top scorer of the country, was not eligible to play due to the nationality dispute after representing Spain at various levels of young people, before deciding to change the African nation.
The equatorial Guinea now faces a difficult task to make it the second best positioned team that will guarantee a playoff place due to the deduction of points. A similar destination awaits South Africa who also presented a not eligible player in Teboho Mokoena.
Mokoena was supposed to be suspended by the game against Lesotho after collecting two reservations in previous games, but played in the 2-0 victory leaving the country with three possible three points, three deduction goals.
The ruling against the equatorial Guinea has now filed fears in the Hugo South Africa camp with the potential of the Republic of Benin at level with them, and Nigeria fell only three points behind them when the deduction of points is applied.
However, they will continue to be the favorites in their group, but now it will mean that they need to win their two remaining games to be sure to reach the 2026 World Cup.
