The Nigerian army firmly rejected the accusation of harassment and intimidation by its troops in the State of the Cross River, describing the claim is unfounded and efforts to tarnish efforts to maintain military peace in the region.
The rebuttal came in response to a report that showed that the army deployed in Ikom and the Obubra Regional Government had sided or the local residents were intimidated in the midst of the ongoing land dispute between the Alesi and Ochon Community.
In a statement entitled “Re -Allegation of Harassment of Troops in Disputes between the Alesi and Ochon Community in the Cross River State,” Division 82 of the Nigerian army called the accusation “wrong, misleading, and clearly aimed at discredit the efforts of troops who worked tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
This division emphasizes that soldiers from Battalion 245, who are currently placed in the area, are strictly mobilized for internal security operations aimed at maintaining peace and protecting life.
“Troops from 245 battalions are currently mobilized in public areas for internal security operations. Their presence is strictly to help civil authorities for the preservation of public order in full compliance with constitutional provisions,” the statement clarified.

The army also revealed that his troops quickly intervened on September 19, 2025, when violence flared up between the two communities. The fast placement, according to the army, is to prevent further escalation and to restore calm.
“Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and prevent legal details and order that can endanger life and property,” the statement added, emphasizing that the army remained neutral and had no “ownership in ownership or disputed land settlement.”
To further ease the tension, the Army asked the traditional rulers, youth leaders, and stakeholders in Alesi and Ochon to embrace the legitimate and without violence to resolve their differences, while urged the community to remain vigilant and report the original security issues.
The army also expressed his compliance with professionalism and respect for human rights in his duties.
“The army convinced the residents of Alesi and Ochon about professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, urged community leaders to embrace legitimate and peaceful paths in resolving their differences.”
The statement ended with a warning of wrong information and encouraged the public to support peace efforts rather than triggering distrust.
“Further encouraging community members to ignore reports that seek to damage peace efforts and to provide credible information about every security threat or violation through existing reporting channels.”
The cross river community in Alesi and Ochon has been involved in protracted soil conflicts, with occasionally the outbreak of violence. Military involvement, said officials, had stabilized the situation and supported civil authority in restoring order.
