The US reiterates the prohibition of visa in corrupt Nigerians

The United States mission in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the global struggle against corruption, warning that individuals involved in the practice of corruption can be rejected entry into the US, regardless of their social rank or position.

The mission, in a post on the official X account (previously Twitter) on Monday, stated: “Against corruption does not recognize the border or accountability limits. Even when high-profile people are involved in corruption, they can be prohibited from receiving US visas.”

This reminder came against the background of the previous steps taken by Washington in May 2023, when the US government announced a visa restriction to certain Nigerians accused of undermining the country’s democratic process during the 2023 general election.

At that time, State Secretary Antony Blinken, in a statement published on the US Department of Foreign Affairs website, emphasized American support for democracy, noted: “The United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and throughout the world. Today, I announced that we have taken steps to force visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria.” “”

The latest declaration indicates Washington’s sustainable determination to hold individual accountability for corruption practices and election violations.
