2027: Opposition parties hold talks with Atiku, Obi, Makinde, three other presidential candidates for common front

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, six opposition political parties have begun talks with presidential candidates in a bid for them to appear together in the election.

This is part of efforts to implement the resolution reached at the G100 Opposition Summit held recently.

The consultation involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied People’s Movement (APM), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

The presidential candidates involved in the talks are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Prince Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP. The meetings took place at different times in the past two weeks.

According to a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the consultation aims to advance the resolution of the G100 Opposition Summit, which calls for continued dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties.

The summit resolutions also emphasized the need to maintain multiparty democracy and protect the interests of the Nigerian people ahead of the next general elections.

The statement described the consultations as a practical step towards implementing the resolution, providing a platform for party leaders and presidential candidates to discuss the framework for opposition cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider ways to advance a common democratic agenda.

He added that the discussions were driven by the belief that the challenges facing Nigeria require serious engagement across party lines, and political leaders are expected to prioritize the future of the country, the well-being of citizens and the credibility of elections over narrow political interests.

Consultations are still ongoing, with further engagement it is hoped to develop a G100 resolution and a statement of the parties’ commitment to an organized opposition capable of working together in the national interest.

The coalition said Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agree on next steps as discussions progress.
