On Sunday the state of Kwara was thick in mourning while the heavily armed bandits launched coordinated attacks against two communities, killing no less than 15 people, including forest guards, policemen and leaders of the newly recruited community.
The accidents, which occurred in OKE-Ode, the area of the local government IFELODUN and TSARAGI in the area of the local government of Ed, have made several residents and many other injured kidnapped.
Witnesses said that armed men hit Oke-Ode for the first time in the early hours of Sunday, where they put an ambush to local security volunteers.
Among those killed there were leader of the community identified such as Oji, Saheed Mitubi and Baale ógba Ayo. The attackers also kidnapped four members of the same family first on the run.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media showed that the bodies of vigilantes killed were evacuated in a police station, while the wounded were racing to share the general hospital.
A local vigilant leader, Ajetunmobi, blamed the authorities to ignore the warnings.
“We heard from Saturday evening that the bandits were moving for the community and sent notices to the security agents. Unfortunately, they still attacked, starting from the post on duty,” he said.
A few hours earlier, another set of armed men invaded Tsaragi, Edu Lga and kidnapped a businessman, Suleiman Ndana, popularly known as “manager”.
Witnesses said that the attackers stormed his house around midnight, shooting gunshots before sweeping him away. Ndana, who recently established a refueling station in Yana Kokonna, believed it was their goal.
The latest violence follows a series of kidnappings in Kwara. Saturday, according to what reported, armed men killed a driver and kidnapped four passengers to Omu Aran. Days before, a woman and a teenager were kidnapped in Lafiagi’s emorated.
Reacting to the murders, the National President of the Oke-Ode Community Development Association, Alhaji Ganiyu Ajala, condemned the attacks and urged the government’s intervention.
“While praises the government on the measures already taken, we ask the efforts doubled to completely remove these unwanted elements from OK-Ode and the entire state,” he said.
The State Police spokesman, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the accidents, but said that the complete details would be issued after receiving complete relationships from the divisions concerned.
The governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq described murders as “strain”, committing a stronger action.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims. Nothing can compensate mourning, despite our efforts and investments in the formation of forest guards. Our people are understandably worried and share their pain,” he said in a declaration signed by his main press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.
The governor revealed that the headquarters of the army had directed the general officer by commanding 2 Division, Ibadan, to temporarily move to Kwara to coordinate the operations against the bandits.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Health of the State has moved its expected medical sensitization from Oke-Ode to the Ompo Cottage hospital due to the security situation. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, said that the move was necessary to safeguard the Medici and residents teams.
The latest attacks are added to the growing wave of insecurity in Kwara and in the central-northern region, fueling requests for urgent and decisive safety measures.
