Chapter of the State of Akwa Ibom from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Secretary of the Party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has rejected the dissolution of the State Work Committee which was announced on Wednesday by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Oologunagba.
Oologunagba, in a statement, has revealed that the National Work Committee (NWC) decided to dissolve the executive of the State led by AKPAN’s elder Aniekan. He further announced the appointment of the Caregiver Committee consisting of 31 people chaired by Igwat Umoren to run party affairs for three months while waiting for a new congress.
In a fast rebuttal, Senator Anyanwu described the announcement as “null and void.” In a statement issued at UYO on Thursday, the National Secretary of the PDP stated that there was no formal NWC meeting held to make such decisions.
“There is no official task of the National Publicity Secretary to implement NWC decisions. Recognized press release has no effect, and the State Work Committee Akwa Ibom remains unresolved,” said Anyanwu, urged party officials in the state to continue their duties in line with the party constitution.
Reacting to development, Chairman of AKWA IBOM PDP, AKPAN’s elder, held an emergency meeting of the State Executive Committee in Uyo, after that he declared himself as an authentic chairman. He asked party members and the community to ignore the notification of dissolution, insisting the legal process was not followed.
Meanwhile, one of the elected EXCCO members mentioned in the newly formed guard committee, Ekpong Edem, also rejected inclusion. Edem, who currently serves as deputy chairman of the senator under the executive led by AKPAN, described the new committee as “illegal” and promised loyalty to the ruling leadership.
The State Executive Committee then made a voice of confidence in AKPAN, increasingly rooted in the division in the party for the legitimacy of the dissolution.
