The newly signed defender of Inter Milan, Manuel Akanji, opened on the reason why he played for the Swiss national team before the national senior team of Nigeria, reports Owngoalnigeria.com.
Akanji, who joined the Italian giants after a period of three seasons very successful with Manchester City, has 73 caps for Switzerland at a higher level, after progressing from their youth teams.
He was eligible to play for Nigeria before making his senior international reverence for Switzerland in 2017. However, he still carries a tattoo of the Nigeria super eagles logo on his arm.
“This is the eagle, of the Nigerian national team, with football underneath. It is something that I carry with me,” he explained.
Akanji came forward to explain why he decided to play for Switzerland despite his proud Nigerian history and his inheritance.
“Obviously, play for the Swiss national team, but I’m still very proud to be Nigerian. I could only make a decision, but they are still with me all the time. It has been a long time since I have been back to Nigeria. It is difficult for me because I do not have a break in the winter, and summer is the rainy season, so you never know what you are going to get, but when I was young, I have returned three or four times.
