The African Volleyball Confederation honors NOC President Gumel

The President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, has been honored with an Award of Excellence at the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) congress held in Sal, Cape Verde.

The prestigious award was given to Gumel in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports administration, the development of volleyball and the growth of the Olympic Movement in Nigeria and across Africa.

Gumel, regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading volleyball administrators, has dedicated decades to developing and promoting the sport at national, continental and international levels.

His recognition at the CAVB Congress further highlights his influence within African sports administration and his long-standing contribution to the growth of volleyball.

As president of the NOC, Gumel remained a leading figure in Nigeria’s Olympic movement, representing the country in various continental and international sporting engagements.

His leadership experience also extends to the African Volleyball Confederation and the broader international sporting community, where he has held influential positions and contributed to the administration and development of the sport.

In addition to his role in volleyball and the Olympic movement, Gumel served as General Treasurer of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and was involved in the activities of the international Olympic movement.

He is also an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), further reflecting his long-standing contribution to sports administration.

Gumel’s professional career goes beyond sports. He is a civil and structural engineer and previously served as president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

His dual career in engineering and sports administration has made him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s professional and sporting communities.

The latest CAVB recognition adds to the honors Gumel has received for his contributions to sport and international relations.

In 2022, the Japanese government awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun for his contribution to strengthening Japan-Nigeria relations through sports.

The Award of Excellence at the CAVB Congress represents another recognition of Gumel’s lasting contribution to volleyball, sports administration and the development of the Olympic movement in Nigeria and across the African continent.

The honor also represents a proud moment for Nigeria’s sporting leadership, coming at a major continental gathering of volleyball stakeholders committed to advancing the sport across Africa.
