The Gridig Gems – she curls; She wins

On January 22, 2025, the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) marked a new chapter as Cleveland Browns, through its Nigeria Browns operation, Nigeria announced an innovative association aimed at expanding the growth and development of American football at the base level. This collaboration was possible through the Global Markets Program of the National Football League (NFL), which granted the official marketing rights of the Browns in Nigeria.

This association was based on the recognition that Nigeria occupies a significant place in the world football community, with the highest representation of non -American minority groups in the NFL that tracks its roots to the country. Several Cleveland Browns players, including David Njoku, OGBO Okoronkwo, Roy Mbaeteka and Germain Ifedi are of Nigerian ancestry. In addition, American football is one of the fastest growing sports in Africa, with Nigeria emerging as a key center for development. This impulse is being driven by the path of international NFL (IPP) players and regional camps, many of which are headed by former NFL player and Nigerian native, Osi Uumenyiora.

The association focuses on five key areas: base soccer development, training and training support, talent pipe development, community participation and cultural exchange and gender inclusion. It is in this fifth pilar, inclusion of gender, that Nafa and Browns Nigeria launched their flagship initiative of women: the Gidaron Gems initiative.

The initiative was officially launched in April 2025 in Lagos, with dynamic panels with distinguished speakers such as Awasum Junior, continental president of the International Football Federation (IFAF); Pozuelos Nayeli and other representatives of the Cleveland Browns; Adesuwa Imasekha, founder of women who impact Nigeria (profit); Debbie Larry-Izamoje, CEO of Brila Media Group; Cecilia Akintomide, president of the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund; Rinsola Abiola, general director of CLTC; and Chief Dr. Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Okeredolu, among others. The panels explored critical issues that include the development of skills and leadership for women, health and diversity, life beyond the field, the empowerment of women, the importance of male allies in the sports industry and strategies to amplify women’s voices through visibility and innovation.

The president of Nafa, Babajide Akeredolu said during the launch that, “Grideon Gems is our commitment to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to be seen, heard and celebrated inside and outside the field. We are creating an environment where women can lead, protrude and shape their own narratives.

This effort represents an investment in the future, built around flag football and also in leadership, equity and national development. The beneficiaries of our program will include players, coaches and referees, who will serve as pioneers in their respective roles. “

The Gridion Gems initiative is guided by an ambitious five-year strategy (2025-2030) designed to climb their impact and solidify the presence of women in football in Nigeria and beyond. The key objectives include:

  • Empower 250 girls to participate in leadership roles within their communities and in the entire sports ecosystem.
  • Establish 50 Base -led initiatives throughout the country to boost local property, visibility and sustainability of sport.
  • Sponsoring the National Football Team of the Nigerian women’s flag to represent the country at the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28).
  • Expanding the program to African neighboring countries, strengthening regional inclusion and collaboration.
  • Actively involve 150,000 girls in American football through school competitions, development camps and inclusive clinics.
  • Training and certification of 10,000 referees and coaches, building a technical gender pipe for sport.
  • Provide scholarships for 1000 girls, both local and international, through strategic associations aimed at unlocking educational and sports opportunities.

By aligning resources, experience and vision, grill gems, Nafa and Browns Nigeria are building more than football programs, they are building futures. For Nigerian young women, especially girls, this initiative represents an opportunity to discover their voice, their power and place in the world of sports.

Since its official launch, Gridaron Gems has advanced significantly in the progress of women’s participation and leadership in American football in Nigeria:

  • He organized training clinics to equip local coaches and athletes with the technical skills and knowledge required to grow sport at the base level. The Coaching Clinic hit 120 participants.
  • He sponsored the Nigerian women’s flag soccer team, allowing them to represent the country in the IFAF Africa Championship in Egypt, where they emerged as continental champions in the women’s category. The team will now represent Africa in the IFAF World Championship in Germany in 2026.
  • Brila Media Group signed as its official media partner, strengthening the visibility and public commitment of the initiative. Brila’s Media has a reach of more than 1.7 million subscribers throughout its social media platform.
  • He forged strategic associations with key stakeholders, including Alles Charis Group and Stretford Hill Ltd, to expand the scope of the program and deepen the impact.
  • He organized a two -day web seminar for women athletes focused on personal brand, leadership and life beyond the game, which allows participants to lead both inside and outside the field. 95 participants were affected virtually.
  • He associated with Hope Behind Barss Africa to present the football of the American flag to girls in the special correctional center for girls, Idi-Araba, so it is the first sport introduced into the facilities, a powerful tool for rehabilitation and empowerment and 50 girls were trained.
  • He associated with Bemor’s empowered foundation to train more than 50 girls in ICT, installation of solar panels, baking, public speaking and, in particular, included American football for the first time.

These milestones highlight the commitment of the gems of the grill with growing inclusive paths for girls and women in Nigerian football. By combining the global experience with the local passion, the initiative is shaping a new era of American football that defends inclusion, feeds talent and unlocks lasting opportunities.

Nayeli Pozuelos, coordinator, cultural and base marketing, Cleveland Browns said: “This is an innovative program for girls and women of all ages to enter the game, build their trust and show their talents.”

This initiative affirms that American football is not just about executing plays and touchdowns, but that it is about building leaders, strengthening communities and inspiring a generation to dream beyond limits. GRIDARON GEMS has begun to track key impact metrics such as the growth of female participation in secondary and university leagues, the successes of Coaching Web Clinics and Seminars, and the impact of initiatives focused on women, such as brand development workshops and associations with other development organizations. These measurable results ensure that each milestone is not celebrated alone but is used to refine and strengthen future programs.

Nancy Damhindi, legal representative of NAFA and programs coordinator, emphasized: “Gridaron Gems is more than a sport, it is a movement.” She added: “We are committed to continuously monitoring and evaluating our progress to guarantee the impact and long -term sustainability.”

The initiative is prepared to take advantage of its impulse for the rest of the year. Communities can expect extended base soccer clinics, a deeper commitment to athletes and training sessions focused on leadership that go beyond the field. With the continuous support for Browns Nigeria and the amplified visibility of our Brila media campaign, the story of Greceron Gems will reach more hearts inviting participation and drawing in partners who believe in flag football as a powerful tool for empowerment.

Together, grill, NAFA and Browns Nigeria gems are not only growing the game, but are promoting a movement rooted in transformation, responsibility and opportunities for young and women Nigerian athletes.
