UW praises undergraduates’ fundamental research on cybersecurity

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), Texas, United States, has recognized the innovative research of its graduate student in Computer Information Systems, Emma Junior Emmanuel, for its impact on national security and development.

This is contained in the assessment of Associate Professor of Computer Science and RISE Faculty Mentor at PVAMU, Prof. Ahmed Ahmed, who highlighted Emmanuel’s commitment to innovative solutions that address pressing social challenges.

The Faculty-RISE program, led by Vice President for Research and Innovation Dr. Magesh Rajan, said the program is not only designed to empower students through comprehensive research training, dedicated mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration, but is also designed to prepare the next generation of scientists and innovators to drive transformative discoveries.

Professor Ahmed said the work positioned Emmanuel as “An emerging scholar whose efforts align with the university’s mission to advance knowledge for community and national progress.”

The institution said that by moving from the legislative process to the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity, Emmanuel brought a unique perspective to technology and digital protection.

“This rare combination of legislative knowledge and cyber defense capabilities positions Emmanuel as a future thought leader at the intersection of governance and technology,” Ahmed said.

As a legislative aide and member of the National Society of Black Engineers, Emmanuel conducted policy research, supported the drafting of legislative proposals, and advised legislators on pressing issues, while emphasizing digital inclusion, modernizing governance, and the role of technology in national development.

“I quickly realized that technology isn’t just about systems and machines; it’s about people, institutions and how policies allow innovation to thrive,” he said.

“Emmanuel’s research plays an important role in advancing the understanding of privacy-preserving mechanisms in the field of AI-augmented cybersecurity,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed continued: “His work on the intersection of adversary robustness, data privacy, and trust building through AI-based frameworks brings depth and clarity to a complex and rapidly evolving cybersecurity field.

“Additionally, he took many of my graduate courses at PVAMU and excelled as one of the top students in the courses I teach.”

As a graduate research assistant at PVAMU, Emmanuel is studying ways to strengthen national security through artificial intelligence, adding that: “As cyber threats become more complex, our solutions must evolve to be not only technical but also strategic and human-oriented.”
