The Lagos State chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has called for consumption of eggs as it begins direct sales to consumers across the state.
Lagos PAN President, Mojeed Iyiola, said on the sidelines of the association’s march in Lagos on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Iyiola reiterated the importance of egg consumption and the association’s efforts to reduce production costs for consumers through direct sales.
She said: “In commemoration of World Egg Day which is celebrated today (Friday) and every second Friday in October around the world, we are demonstrating the importance of the egg and what it does to our bodies.
“We distributed some free eggs to Ojo General Hospital and public secondary schools in the area to encourage egg consumption for all.
“Egg is not just a meal, it’s like a medicine. If you consume eggs as needed, you are unlikely to go to hospital. That’s why we went to hospitals and schools to raise awareness about egg consumption.”
Iyiola added that the association began direct sales of eggs to consumers in Lagos to reduce exploitation of middlemen.
The PAN president said: “The price of eggs is relatively high but stable. However, it cannot be said that government intervention in the poultry sector is not reflected in egg prices.
The poultry industry accounts for 25% of Nigeria’s agricultural GDP – PAN
“Now, the price of eggs is moderate given the current economic realities. From the farm we sell between N5,000 and N5,200 which is the maximum.
“However, distributors sell a case between N6,000 and N6,500. We have engaged them that a case should not sell more than N5,600 or N5,700 due to transportation.
“Due to the problems we encountered with egg distributors, we decided to start selling our eggs directly to consumers in designated LGAs in Lagos State.
“We have started direct sales to consumers in Alimosho LGA and Idimu-Egbe Local Development Council area of the state, at N5,400 to N5,600 per case every weekend.
“We will gradually expand direct egg sales to consumers in all local government areas of the United States as soon as possible so as to ensure egg price stability.”
