Silversports FC stepped up their preparations for the Afri Football Junior League with a 2-1 victory over System FC in their opening match of the Mbaise Charity Cup tournament at the St. Jude Football Pitch, Amuzi, Mbaise.
The win further boosted the confidence of Mbaise’s team, who are among the teams expected to make an impact in the upcoming Afri Football Junior League.
Silversports FC, who competed in the Imo State League this year, sported a largely young team mixed with some experienced players, a combination that continued to give the team a competitive edge.
The Pride of Mbaise took the lead in the 30th minute through Opara Chukwuemeka before doubling their lead after the restart.
System FC, however, pulled a goal back in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but Silversports FC held on until the final whistle to secure the victory.
The players expressed satisfaction with the result, saying the Charity Cup is providing an important platform to build momentum ahead of the Afro Football Junior League, which begins in Imo State next week.
Speaking on the team’s preparation, Silversports FC owner Kennedy Onwunali said the players are in good shape and are looking forward to representing the club.
We are in great shape and looking forward to representing the club and doing what we know best,” Onwunali said.
The team’s coach, Coach Sabinus, also expressed satisfaction with the players’ performance against System FC, stressing that reproducing the same level of effort and performance in the Afri Football Junior League could take Silversports FC far in the competition.
Silversports FC will now turn their attention to their next Afri Football Junior League match against Sam Decent FC on Saturday.
