Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Biography: Everything You Need to Know

Biafra, formerly known as the Republic of Biafra, was a breakaway state in West Africa that proclaimed its independence from Nigeria and lasted between 1967 and 1970. The eastern region of Nigeria, populated mainly by Igbo, constituted its territory.

C. Odumegwu Ojukwu, an Igbo military officer, founded Biafra on May 30, 1967, under his leadership. This followed a series of military coups and ethnic conflicts that began after Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and culminated in the massacres of Igbo and other southeastern ethnic groups living in northern Nigeria. Immediately after the separation of Biafra, the Nigerian army invaded the region, triggering the start of the Nigerian Civil War (also known as the Nigeria–Biafra War).

Nnamdi Kanu, a pro-Biafra activist of British-Nigerian origin, rose to prominence in 2009 through his broadcasts on Radio Biafra, a radio station licensed to broadcast in the United Kingdom, about government neglect, unequal distribution of resources, ethnic marginalization and political alienation in southeastern Nigeria.

The Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group aiming to achieve independence for Biafra, was established in 2012 by Abia-born political activist Nnamdi Kanu. On September 18, 2021, the Government of the Federation nevertheless declared IPOB a terrorist organization. His wife is Uchechi Okwu Kanu, a resident of Northern England in the United Kingdom, of British and Nigerian descent.
