Khamenei will be buried in the Shiite shrine in his hometown

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei bids farewell to the world

The body of slain Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried at a Shiite shrine in his hometown of Mashhad, the Fars news agency reported on Tuesday.

The agency, close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that the burial should take place behind the shrine of Imam Reza, similar to that of Khamenei’s father.

The mausoleum of the eighth Imam of Twelver Shia Islam, the state religion of Iran, is considered the most important Shia shrine in the country.

Before that, according to Fars, a public ceremony is planned in Tehran.

Details on methods and calendar will be communicated later.

Mashhad, a metropolis of around three million inhabitants in the north-east of the country, is the second largest city in Iran.

Khamenei was born there on April 19, 1939.

He died in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on Saturday.
