The Lagos government plans to demolish buildings affected by high-voltage cables

Residents and businesses located under high tension cables in Alagbado/Oke-Odo along the AIT road corridor in Lagos State have been informed of plans to demolish their buildings.

This is as stated by the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA) which will demolish these buildings.

A statement from the Lagos State government on Tuesday, said officials of the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA), moved to the Alagbado/Oke-Odo axis to address serious physical planning violations, specifically targeting buildings built directly under or very close to high voltage power lines.

It was stated that the operation was carried out on direct orders from the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Olumide Oluyinka, as part of a statewide effort to restore urban sanity and avert an avoidable disaster.

Leading the exercise on behalf of TPL General Manager Daisi Oso was TPL Emmanuel Seyi Ogunyemi.

Together with his team, Ogunyemi oversees the serving of violation notices to residents and the physical marking of buildings found to be in violation of high voltage limits.

Property owners were directed to move their buildings away from dangerous corridors, as officials said the move was not just about red tape, but also about preserving human life.

According to the team, this action is an important step to protect lives and property, reduce environmental hazards, and ensure that residents strictly comply with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Act of 2019 (as amended).

Speaking during the visit, TPL Ogunyemi reiterated the Agency’s commitment to proactive monitoring and law enforcement. He warned of the dangers of ignoring these setbacks.

“Structures built under or too close to high voltage lines pose serious safety risks to residents and the wider community,” Ogunyemi said.

To ensure the sustainability of this exercise, the LASISMA team extended their mission to the leadership of the Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The team had successful discussions with the Chairman of LCDA, Abiodun Jimoh Ejigbadero. The meeting concentrated on the need to improve teamwork between state and local authorities to encourage appropriate land use and promote sustainable growth in communities

This enforcement exercise is part of LASISMA’s ongoing efforts to enforce planning standards across informal urban open spaces and incidental open spaces in Lagos. With the ultimate goal of ensuring security, order, and visual appeal, the government is working to reshape the city for the benefit of all its residents.
