Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi says the problem of poverty in Nigeria does not lie in lack of resources, but in the choices the country makes.
He said a country blessed with oil, gas and a large and energetic population should not experience the hardships that Nigeria is experiencing. According to him, the real problem is leadership and a culture that respects corruption, not eradicating it.
Obi spoke in Abuja when he received the leadership of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Craftsmen of Nigeria (ASVAN), led by its National President, Comrade Obijuru Everest, during a courtesy visit.
“We are poor because we choose to be poor. We give honorary titles and seats in the front row to those who steal public funds, but we hope to continue to grow,” Obi said.
He compared Nigeria with Indonesia, which he said has the same size and population, but has a better economy due to stronger leadership and clearer priorities.
To move Nigeria forward, Obi shared how the Indonesian leader advised him to fight theft of public funds, invest in education and health services, and see the positive results of the contribution of healthy and educated individuals to the economy.
He said countries that grow sustainably focus on people and small businesses, emphasizing that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) will thrive if governments create stable and transparent systems.
“Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshiping those who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right. Vote, defend your voice, and help produce good leaders at all levels, from councilors to presidents, and you will see this country change,” he urged.
Previously, Everest said ASVAN had followed Obi’s political journey and believed it was important to identify and support his aspirations to move the country forward.
He said craftsmen remain the main driver of the economy but continue to experience difficulties due to the lack of appropriate policies and support systems.
