Nigerian police in Lagos have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for $2 million.
Police told the suspect, who lives in Igbogbo in Ikorodu area of Lagoshe would organize the sale to raise money for them burial of the deceased mother.
According to police sources, the child’s mother reported the incident after discovering that her child had been sold.
Following the complaint, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The suspect reportedly admitted to selling the child and claimed economic difficulties pushed him to commit the act.
He explained that he was in contact with the woman who bought the baby Facebookafter learning that he was looking for a child.
According to him, the buyer asked him to bring the child Mile 2 in Lagoswhere a man representing the woman picked up the child.
He said the buyer then moved out N2 million in his bank account.
The suspect told investigators he gave N500,000 to his sisterthe child’s mother, and used the remaining money to arrange the mother’s burial.
However, after the funeral, the sister would have asked for the return of the child, claiming not to be aware of the sale and accusing him of using spells to manipulate her into accepting.
His complaint to the police eventually led to his arrest.
The deputy police commissioner in charge of the SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are also trying to identify the woman who allegedly bought the child.
According to Akinbisehin the suspect will be reported to court once the investigations were concluded.
