MURIC warns Ogun Muslims against ‘pregnancy promises’ as 2027 elections approach

The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised the alarm over growing divisions among Muslims in the state, urging caution and unity as the 2027 general elections approach.

In a statement on Friday, the group warned that some Muslim leaders and community members are being swayed by politicians’ “pregnant promises,” commitments whose realization is uncertain and often self-serving.

The Chairman of MURIC in Ogun State, Ustaadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, and Secretary, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, highlighted what they described as a worrying trend: internal bickering among Muslims over political loyalties, while politicians themselves continue to meet, strategize and maintain alliances across party lines.

“Brothers are starting to argue. Friends are becoming suspicious. Clerics and community leaders are moving into opposite camps, all because of political loyalties and party affiliations,” the statement read.

The group warned that some respected voices in the Muslim community have begun to align themselves with political actors in exchange for financial incentives and promises, a development that MURIC described as a betrayal of their sacred responsibilities.

“Religious leadership should not be used as a negotiating table to gain political benefits. It is a platform to defend Islam, protect Muslims and speak for justice,” the statement added.

MURIC reminded Muslims that while political power is temporary, unity and integrity within the Ummah is enduring. The organization also called for strategic thinking to prevent another prolonged period of Christian political leadership in Ogun State.

“The politics of our time is not worth destroying brotherhood. No Muslim should allow himself to be used as an instrument of division within the Ummah,” MURIC stressed.

The group concluded with a spiritual reminder, urging Muslims to prioritize truth and justice over personal gain, stressing that the true victory lies in upholding justice before Allah.
