One of Nigeria’s famous midfielders, Henry Nwosu, has died at the age of 62. A teammate of the victorious 1980 AFCON team and football idol, Segun Odegbami announced his death in the early hours of Saturday.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu died after spending five days in hospital fighting for his life.
He said: “what I call ‘the youngest millionaire’ died at 4am this morning at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.
It is with deep pain in my heart that I must bring the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON, the youngest of the victorious 1980 AFCON team.’

Nwosu, born in 1963 in Imo State, was the youngest member of the 1980 AFCON squad, widely celebrated for his role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Green Eagles secured their first continental title on home soil.
His football career began in 1979 with the now defunct New Nigeria Bank football club in Benin-City, Edo State through ASEC Mimosa in Costa de Voire, African Continental Bank FC and then Green Eagles as a midfielder, crowning it with an illustrious managerial role with Ibom Stars, Nigeria U-17, Union Bank team and Gateway United.
