4 dead, 4 injured in collision between trucks and minibuses on the Lekki-Epe highway

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says four passengers have died in an accident involving a truck and a Suzuki commercial minibus in Ajah, Lagos.

LASTMA Director General, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Lagos on Sunday.

Bakare-Oki said four other passengers sustained serious fractures in the accident opposite Beechwood, Shapati, within Ajah, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

He said the fatal collision involved a Howo truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial minibus, popularly called “Korope”.

According to him, initial investigations showed that the driver of the articulated lorry lost control while moving, swerved along the roadway and crashed into the oncoming commercial minibus.

“The catastrophic impact caused the immediate death of four male passengers.

“Four other occupants, two men and two women, suffered serious fractures after becoming trapped in the ravaged wreckage of the vehicle,” he said.

He said LASTMA personnel quickly mobilized to the scene and carefully rescued the trapped victims with the assistance of rescuers and bystanders.

The injured victims were immediately taken to Hamon Royal Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

“The remains of the four deceased passengers were evacuated and deposited at the Shency Hospital mortuary by an FRSC emergency ambulance,” he said.

Bakare-Oki said police officers provided security at the scene and assured that a thorough investigation will determine the cause of the accident.

“The truck driver and her boyfriend fled shortly after seeing the extent of the accident,” he said.

He urged motorists, especially drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise caution, obey traffic rules and adopt responsible driving habits to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
