Anambra Police Commissioner vows to arrest and prosecute officers for professional misconduct

The Anambra State Police Command, on Monday, vowed to fish out and prosecute officers caught in a viral video engaging in unprofessional conduct in Onitsha.

Officers, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command received a complaint regarding a viral video of motorists being extorted by officers at a checkpoint.

Ikenga added that the command, through Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Okpoko, intercepted the complaint and immediately initiated steps to identify the officers involved in the alleged act.

“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed the DPO to present the concerned officers for necessary investigation and possible disciplinary action in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Preliminary findings in support of the ongoing investigation reveal the following: The DPO had previously provided detailed information to the officers to identify the personnel allegedly involved in the act. The money allegedly collected from the victim was returned, which demonstrates a serious accusation and unprofessional conduct of the officers.

“The involvement of the POS operator suggests a possible conspiracy in the incident. The command reiterates that it will not protect any officer found guilty. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with established procedures. The command remains committed to ensuring professionalism, accountability and protection of the rights of all citizens,” he added.
