Why we ditched Obi in favor of Tinubu as an option for 2027

Ahead of the 2027 presidential elections in Nigeria, the Nigerian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, on Tuesday explained why it shifted its support from Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group led by Leonard Kawas in an interview with Channels Television, said although they support Obi against Tinubu in 2023, they are switching allegiance, because they believe President Tinubu is on the right track, which is why they decided to support his bid for re-election.

“Yes, in 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu voted against Peter Obi, but I voted for Peter Obi. If it was for convenience, I would have voted for Tinubu, but I didn’t in 2023. That is my fundamental human right. Based on the issues on the ground and Roh’s guidance, I and my group are supporting President Tinubu for 2027 because we believe he is on the right track. He will definitely take Nigeria to very high levels in all consequences,” he said.

The Charismatic Bishops recently sparked political discussions after they publicly endorsed and declared their support for President Tinubu in next year’s elections.

This comes as Tinubu, Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other presidential candidates will contest the presidential election on January 16, 2027.
