The Ministry of Defense promises greater support to the Navy and calls for civil-military synergy


The Ministry of Defense on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the operational capability of the Nigerian Navy through increased support, improved readiness and closer civil-military collaboration.

The Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, made the pledge in Abuja, during a familiarity visit to the Navy Headquarters.

Pheelangwah commended naval personnel for their professionalism and vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.

He said the visit aimed to deepen the strategic alignment between the ministry and the Nigerian Navy, as well as gain first-hand information on operational priorities, challenges and ongoing initiatives.

He said effective civil-military cooperation remains vital to achieving sustainable national security objectives.

The Permanent Secretary also assured the ministry’s readiness to support the navy in areas such as force availability, budget compliance, personnel welfare and human capital development.

He emphasized strengthening Nigeria’s defense industrial base, promoting local content and strengthening indigenous capacity to contribute to national economic growth.

In his response, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abbas thanked the Ministry for the cordial working relationship and highlighted critical areas that need support.

He said these areas include procurement of equipment, development of infrastructure, recruitment of medical personnel and completion of ongoing projects.

The directors of the Ministry and the staff officers of the Navy Command were present at the visit. (NAN)
